Registering a Death
Notifying the Authorities
One of the first steps after a bereavement is to register the death at a local Registrar’s Office. This must be done within five days (in England and Wales) and can only take place once the Confirmatory Medical Certificate of Cause of Death has been issued by a doctor.

To complete the registration, you will need the following information and documents:
✓ Confirmatory Medical Certificate of Cause of Death
✓ Birth Certificate
✓ Marriage or civil partnership certificate (if applicable)
✓ NHS medical card
✓ The deceased’s full name and any previous names used
✓ Their last address
✓ Their occupation
✓ Details of a surviving spouse or civil partner
✓ Information on whether they were receiving any state benefits
What You Will Receive
If no post-mortem is required, the registrar will provide:
✓ Certified Copy of the Entry of Death (Death Certificate) – this is the official document and a nominal fee is charged per copy.
✓ Certificate for Burial or Cremation (BD8) – this should be handed to the funeral director.
✓ Social Security Certificate – for the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP).
✓ Advice leaflets – offering further guidance on what to do next.
💡 Tip: Banks, building societies and insurance companies will require official copies of the death certificate. It is usually cheaper to obtain multiple copies at the time of registration.
