Coroners Involvement

Why a Death May Be Referred to the Coroner

It is a legal requirement for all deaths to be referred to the Coroner if a doctor has not seen the deceased within the last 14 days.

This does not always mean that a post-mortem examination will take place. In many cases, it is simply a conversation between the doctor and the Coroner to confirm whether the doctor can issue the necessary paperwork.

When a Post-Mortem May Be Needed

If the cause of death is not certain, the Coroner may request a post-mortem examination. The purpose of this examination is to establish the medical cause of death.

✓ A post-mortem can sometimes delay the funeral.
✓ Families are advised not to set a funeral date until the Coroner’s examinations have been completed.
✓ Once investigations are concluded, the Coroner will notify the next of kin and provide guidance on what happens next.
